July 29, 2023. I always say that when I finish one of these cartoon maps, I know the town better than a lot of the people who live there! Today marked a big step in my Chapel Hill education when I stopped by Julian's, the iconic clothing store on East Franklin Street. The new owner of Julan's is Bart Fox, who is the grandson of founder Maurice Julian, and nephew of well-known fashion designer Alexander Julian, the previous owner of the store.  Bart showed me around the store, including old photos and paintings of various locations the store has occupied since its founding in 1942. He also showed me the store's collection of more than 25,000 fabric samples!  Julian's will be represented on the Chapel Hill Cartoon Map, and may become our Official Haberdasher ! June 13, 2023

Getting to know the town - the businesses, the landmarks, the changes, and even the detours.

Here is a story about a place I found that will be part of the Chapel Hill Cartoon Map - a public pool that was built right in town so that Black children would have a good and safe place to swim. A.D. Clark Pool | From the Rock Wall

I drew two cartoon maps of the Hawley-Lake Wallenpaupack area - one summer, one winter.  The indigenous Lenape people named the area "Wallenpaupack" which means "The Stream of Swift and Slow Water."

I drew the Rehoboth Beach Cartoon Map in 1991. It was the first Cartoon Map that I drew which included a 'find it' feature, in which all the characters, funny animals, and numerous other items are listed around the border for the viewer to find within the poster. (Think Where's Waldo.) I had just completed a similar series of 'find it' books titled William Wanders Off, Gus is Gone, Lucy is Lost, and Roving Rosie Reports.

'Welcome to River Reporter Country' was the first full-sized, full-color cartoon poster that I drew c. 1990. It was a promotion for the River Reporter newspaper in Narrowsburg, NY and it's bi-state coverage area. It was distributed as an insert in 5,000 copies of the newspaper.

The Stourbridge Lion Cartoon Poster, Honesdale, PA. The Stourbridge Lion was the first steam locomotive to run in America (1828).  A replica of the Lion is housed in the Wayne County Historical Society in Honesdale. Stourbridge Lion - Wikipedia

I found this interesting piece of local lore. Gotta visit this place and put it on the Cartoon Map!
